If you’re still on the hunt for some garments that are both trendy and totally budget-friendly, then check out our favorite pieces you can nab from Amazon right now. And the best part? They’re all under $40.

Ribbed Scoopneck Bodysuit
We were hesitant to jump on this bandwagon, but now that we’ve tried it, we don’t think we’ll ever go back. If you’ve ever struggled with the bunchting that occurs after tucking in a shirt, then you definitely need to give the bodysuit a shot because not only are unsightly shirt bunches gone, but you never have to worry about your shirt riding up and coming untucked ever again. Bodysuits are great for summertime because they’re lightweight and sit close to your body. We love to wear ours with maxi skirts and denim shorts, but there’s no wrong way to don a bodysuit.

Our pick: MANGOPOP Bodysuit from Amazon (18.99, shop here)

Matching Midi and Tank Set
Are you jumping on the matchy matchy trend? We couldn’t get enough of our cozy matching loungewear during the cooler months, so we’re taking it into the spring and summertime, just in a different way. If you’ve got a function this summer that you don’t want to sweat to death at, a matchcing midi and tank set could be just the thing you’re looking for. Not only are they cool and flowy, but they take the guesswork out of choosing an outfit. All you have to do is accessorize and pick shoes, and something tells us you’re a pro at that.

Our pick: Pretty Garden 2-Piece Dress from Amazon ($28.99, shop here)

Flowy Palazzo Pants
You can never go wrong when you reach for linen during the spring and summertime, especially when that linen is the color of sunshine. Because we’re opting for a long pant here, flowy as they may be, we still like to keep it light and simple on top; these pair great with the bodysuit listed above or a simple cap-sleeve graphic tee or blouse.

Our pick: Tronjori Wide Leg Palazzo from Amazon ($33.99, shop here)

Minimalist Swimwear
We fancy ourselves quite the minimalist queens in certain aspects, one of which is certainly swimwear. We love the scoopneck and the highwaist to this bikini, and even better still we love how simple it is to pair with clothes making it perfect for any and every poolside day we have planned this summer. All we have to do is throw on denim shorts, a white short sleeve button down, and leather sandals, and we’re ready to take on the day.

Our pick: SweatyRocks Solid Set from Amazon ($27.99, shop here)

Cut Out Dress
During the summertime we rock a lot of dresses, mostly because we don’t want to wear pants, and to say we love this dress is an understatement. The length is appropriate for any and every function you may be attending, the ruffles give the dress a ton of visual interest, no sleeves not only keeps the proportions visually pleasing but ensures you’ll stay cool, and the cut out is in the back, just peeping around to the front so it’s not too over the top.

Our pick: Anrabess Summer Sleeveless Eastic Waist Sundress from Amazon ($38.99, shop here)

What Does Cruelty-Free Mean? https://www.youbeauty.com/life/what-does-cruelty-free-mean/ https://www.youbeauty.com/life/what-does-cruelty-free-mean/#respond Tue, 18 Jan 2022 17:00:46 +0000 https://www.youbeauty.com/?p=175494 “Cruelty-free.” “Not tested on animals.” These are buzzwords in the beauty industry. Similar to sulfate-free, paraben-free, and fragrance-free claims, even if you don’t know precisely what they mean, these descriptors sound positive. We see them in a product’s description or on product packaging and think, I want that.

Whether you are strictly cruelty-free when shopping for cosmetics or not, understanding those words can be confusing. To each brand, cruelty-free can mean something different. Even PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies Program differs from Cruelty-Free International’s Leaping Bunny Program. Surprisingly, a brand can claim that its products are cruelty-free without providing any proof and, in some cases, even lie and get away with it.

This is why it is so important for beauty companies to offer transparency. But, for those that don’t, it is up to us to educate ourselves on what cruelty-free actually means. To simplify, there are three main tiers of cruelty-free status.

1.           First Tier: The brand does not test on animals, is not sold in Mainland China, and is neither owned by a cruelty-free parent company or does not have a parent company. (Examples: LUSH, Dermalogica, and Summer Fridays)
2.           Second Tier: The brand does not test on animals, is not sold in Mainland China, but is owned by a parent company that is not cruelty-free. (Examples: Smashbox, Bare Minerals, Buxom)
3.           Third Tier: The brand does not directly test on animals but sells in Mainland China. (Examples: OGX, MAC Cosmetics, Nars)

The first tier is what the most loyal cruelty-free shoppers stick to. This tier means that the brand is 100% cruelty-free, is not owned by a company that tests on animals, and does not sell in Mainland China (where the law requires animal testing for imported cosmetics). The popular cruelty-free blog Cruelty-Free Kitty uses this tier to qualify a brand as cruelty-free in its extensive list of cruelty-free beauty brands. If you aren’t sure if a brand is cruelty-free, this is where you can check. And if you want to ensure you are only supporting 100% cruelty-free brands, this is the tier you want. This coincides with Leaping Bunny, an internationally recognized organization that is highly reliable and selective with its approvals. For a brand to have Leaping Bunny certification, it must agree to independent audits that prove that its cruelty-free claims are accurate.

But, cruelty-free means something different to everyone. Some people don’t consider a brand to test on animals if they aren’t the ones doing it. For example, Bare Minerals is a cruelty-free brand that does not sell in Mainland China, but their parent company Shiseido is not cruelty-free. The same goes for other companies owned by Shiseido, like Buxom and MD Formulations. The issue here is a matter of ethics. If Estee Lauder, a non-cruelty-free company, owns a cruelty-free company like Bumble and Bumble, it still makes a profit. Even so, this tier seems to be the most popular with cruelty-free shoppers.

Finally, the third tier is not cruelty-free at all, if you ask most cruelty-free shoppers. Even if the product you purchase in the US has never been tested on animals, by selling in Mainland China, the brand allows the Chinese government to test their products on animals and pays for it. To clarify, this is only the case for products sold in China, not made in China. Therefore, a company making its products in China can be cruelty-free, but it isn’t if marketed to Chinese consumers. Any brand that sells in Mainland China agrees to allow the government to test its products on animals. And this is the reason so many beauty brands are not cruelty-free.

The Chinese market is enormous, so it makes sense why so many brands choose to make this sacrifice from a monetary standpoint. And the reason many brands can still declare themselves cruelty-free when sold in China is because they are not the ones testing on animals. Those in this boat can even be PETA-approved because their approval methods are not as exhaustive as Leaping Bunny’s. In fact, this is a loophole because the brands can claim to be cruelty-free since the Chinese government is doing the testing even if the brand pays for it. To know if a brand allows animal testing, you can often check their FAQ page, and it will say something like, we do not test our products on animals unless required by law.

With this, some people don’t blame the brands for Chinese law, but rather the Chinese government. Chinese law requires mandatory animal testing on all cosmetics manufactured outside of China. Anytime a brand, domestic or not, sells in China, it takes the chance that its products could require animal testing. Although the products may be free from pre-market animal testing, if a Chinese consumer reacts to a product, it can be pulled from the shelves and tested on animals. And even with this fact, PETA supports such brands, which further indicates that PETA’s approval is not as specific as possible.

As you can see, cruelty-free is not as simple of a label as it seems. And ultimately, it is up to you to determine what it means to you and your buying habits.

Say Goodbye to Brittle Nails https://www.youbeauty.com/life/say-goodbye-to-brittle-nails/ https://www.youbeauty.com/life/say-goodbye-to-brittle-nails/#respond Thu, 02 Dec 2021 13:00:08 +0000 https://www.youbeauty.com/?p=175417 Whether your nails have been weakened from acetone or a weekly habit of gel manicures, keeping your natural nails in tip-top shape is important. When nails get weaker, not only are they more likely to break, but they can even peel, which makes simply painting them that much more difficult.

Not to mention the pain that can come along with breaking or cracking nails. For those reasons, we wanted to share a few insider tips on how to bring your nails back to their former glory. Say goodbye to brittle nails and say hello to long and strong ones.

1. This is probably the easiest one on our list: to avoid too much water. When will you ever hear that? When it comes to your nails, water, especially hot water, is a no-no. Washing your hands, doing the dishes, or scrubbing the tub are all ways to dry out your nails and your hands. Whether the shocking water temperature or constant contact with harsh soaps or cleaning products, try to cut down on your sudsing up. Of course, wash your hands when need be, but use rubber gloves to protect your nails from further damage when using detergents.

2. Another easy one that helps a lot more than just your nails is staying hydrated. Drinking enough water has endless benefits, and stronger nails is one of them. Water hydrates the skin on your face, but also your hands. And that means your cuticles will retain more moisture and effectively enhance the quality of your nails.

3. Use cuticle oil. Nearly every brand of nail polish has cuticle oil on the market. You can pick up your favorite or this bestseller, Sally Hansen Complete Care 7-in-1 (Shop here), as it is readily available, affordable, and offers tons of benefits to improve your nails. Not only does a cuticle treatment like this moisturize the entire nail bed, but it strengthens, fills ridges, enhances growth, and even works as a base and topcoat for polish.

4. Then, if you have the time a soak, it is not only relaxing but intensely beneficial for weak and brittle nails. You can find a ton of DIY options on Pinterest, but our favorite has three simple ingredients. Add ¼ cup fresh orange juice (for antioxidants and vitamins), 1 clove of chopped garlic (which has selenium and antifungal properties), and ¼ cup of olive oil (that offers intense moisture) to a dish and soak your nails for about 15 minutes. This works so well you should start to see a difference in your nails in only two weeks if you do this about three times a week.

5. Quit using your nails as a can opener. There are other tools like scissors or actual can openers that are made to open difficult packaging. Putting your nails through that trauma can lead to intense breakage that will set you back on your nail strengthening journey.

6. Take a manicure holiday. Yes, we know how addicting a trip to the salon can be, but the strong and dangerous chemicals in many of those products can be extremely damaging to your nails. And even more so than the polish, the nail polish remover works similarly to a paint thinner. So skip the acetone and harsh scrubbing, and go au naturale for at least a few months to help rebuild your brittle nails. And if you think peeling or picking off your polish is better than using a chemical remover, that will not do you any favors. When you scrape off nail polish, the top layer of your nails comes along with it, thinning them out even more.

7. Finally, some supplements and yummy foods have been known to improve nail strength. Biotin helps to maintain healthy hair, skin, and nails. If you have ever purchased a women’s vitamin, there is a good chance there was biotin included. But taking a supplement will only go so far. Naturally adding biotin into your diet by way of delicious foods is the best route to take. So biotin-rich foods to add to your grocery list are eggs, almonds, sweet potatoes, and spinach.

This might seem like a lot of changes for you to make, but if you want stronger and healthier nails, they are certainly worth the effort. The days of struggling with thinning, weak, and even painful nails are over.

How To Declutter Your Life https://www.youbeauty.com/life/how-to-declutter-your-life/ https://www.youbeauty.com/life/how-to-declutter-your-life/#respond Thu, 16 Sep 2021 20:15:39 +0000 https://www.youbeauty.com/?p=175285 Do you look around your home, only to find many possessions you don’t use or forgot that you had? Or maybe you feel like your home is turning into something that you would see on an episode of “Hoarders.” Either way, decluttering is a great way to not only free up space in your home but relieve some stress. If you need some tips on where to start, then this is definitely written for you.

    1. Start Slow
When it comes to decluttering, most would think it’s important to get the task done quickly and move on with your life, but you’ll want to start the process slowly, especially if this is your first time. Even the busiest person on the planet can do this because all you need for this method is five minutes per day. In those five minutes, start with a small section of your home and work your way around the house. Decluttering can be extremely overwhelming, so tackling the task in five-minute increments will help you remain productive without getting burnout.
    2. Give One Item Away Daily
Similar to starting out slowly, we recommend decluttering each item slowly too. If you give away one item per day for a year, you will have 365 objects that you no longer need to worry about by the time you’re through. Even if it seems ridiculous to only start with one item per day, this can become a more effective solution over time.
    3. Create A Checklist
This step is for all of our readers that LIVE by lists. A list can be helpful because it creates structure, making it less likely to stray away from your goal. Make priority sections and number them from most to least important. This way, you know the most important place to start and the areas that aren’t as urgent to tend to right now.
    4. Take A Before And After Photo Of A Small Space
Locate a small area in your home, take a “before” photo, and then focus on clearing the clutter in that area. Once you’re done, take an “after” photo and notice the difference you’ve made. By doing this, you can see the impact you’re making by decluttering and motivating yourself to tackle the next places on your list.
    5. Use The “Four-Box” Technique
Get four cardboard boxes together and label each one something different (ex. trash, give away, keep, re-locate). Room by room, sort items into each respective box until they’re full. This method will allow you to keep yourself organized and ensure that each item will be going to the right place. This method also makes the sorting process of decluttering far less overwhelming.
No matter which technique you decide to try, the important thing is to utilize one (or all!) of them. When we declutter, it is beneficial to our health, mind, and life. It helps relieve stress, and it also increases your self-esteem when your home looks and feels good.

Low-Stress Hobbies to Combat Burnout https://www.youbeauty.com/life/low-stress-hobbies-to-combat-burnout/ https://www.youbeauty.com/life/low-stress-hobbies-to-combat-burnout/#respond Fri, 10 Sep 2021 18:50:31 +0000 https://www.youbeauty.com/?p=175277 Have you burnt through everything worth watching on Netflix, and now you don’t know what to do with your free time? A whole year of stay-at-home orders has burnt many of us out on our typical hobbies. But to keep your mental health intact, you need something to enjoy after a long day of work or school – so try these hobbies!

Learn Brush Lettering or Calligraphy
A few months back, I hopped on Amazon in a desperate search for anything to take my mind off of work, and I ended up buying a brush lettering book with a pack of brush pens. I opened it immediately when it arrived, and the swirly, calming lettering technique felt strangely therapeutic. My book was full before I knew it.

If you like to create, or you just want to be someone who beautifully addresses each of their wedding invitations by hand… this is the hobby for you! Plus once you’ve got the hang of it,  brush lettering can lead to some amazing décor – maybe even worthy of selling on Etsy!

Take a Hike
The key to surviving in your house is… getting out of it sometimes. You don’t need to live in the mountains to go hiking, just find a pretty park or trail near you! Being outdoors and active is sure to refresh your mind and soul.
And, while you’re at it, check out our tips on dressing for your hike.
A similar activity that has become a must is a visit to the dog park. If you have a dog, this is a great place to let them run out their energy (which means awesome snuggles for you afterward) while you safely socialize with other dog owners. Plus – you can pet so many dogs there!

Purchase a Calming Video Game
Two games have recently consumed hundreds of hours of my life, and they are Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley. Both are slow-paced, cute games that let you play however you wish. Tending to your virtual farm or developing an animal village might be a good fit if you’re hoping to escape to a new world for a little while!

Roll the Windows Down

You can also try taking a casual drive to get away from home for a moment. Windows open means fresh air, and you can play all your favorite songs. Just remember to stay safe & keep your eyes on the road!
Not sure where to go on your drive? Try searching for the best flowers around. Or head to the local frozen yogurt shop for a sweet snack! Nothing sounds more invigorating than a tasty fro-yo. While you’re at it, check out these road trip fashion tips.

Get Crafty
I don’t know about you, but being stuck inside has made me tired of looking at the same four walls. Why not do yourself a favor and spice them up? Now is a great time to finally get moving on that home-improvement project.

You can still get crafty and change the feel of your space without undergoing a whole home renovation. Pick up some canvases and acrylic paints from your favorite craft store, and get to work on some custom décor! Another fun option for DIY décor would be to get a white sheet and a tie-dye kit, and then try your hand at a groovy tapestry.

Taking care of yourself means nurturing mental health as well, finding fun in life, and investing in hobbies that you love. To stay sharp and avoid burning out, try something creative, calming, or in tune with nature.

Quick(ish) Home Cleaning Checklist https://www.youbeauty.com/life/quickish-home-cleaning-checklist/ https://www.youbeauty.com/life/quickish-home-cleaning-checklist/#respond Thu, 02 Sep 2021 19:30:32 +0000 https://www.youbeauty.com/?p=175263 About once a week, my house suddenly looks like it has exploded. If this is a regular occurrence for you as well, you’re going to want to keep reading.
This home cleaning checklist will help you whip the place back into ship shape!

Kitchen
As they say, the kitchen is the heart of the home. I prefer to say it’s the messiest part. This is where I recommend starting. That way, even if you don’t complete everything, you have a nice and clean environment for preparing food.

    • Dishes – Start here! The sink is a huge asset during cleaning, so you will want to empty it before you do anything else.
    • Stovetop – If you have a gas stove, pop those grates off and get them soaking in some hot water. Sanitize the stovetop next, then come back to those grates, and scrub them good! When you reassemble it, you’ll feel like you have a brand new appliance.
    • Cabinets – I can’t be the only one who seems to constantly clean splatters off my cabinet surfaces… Wipe them clean! Yes, even the lower cabinets!
    • Countertop – Once you’ve cleaned your stove and cabinets, move onto the countertops. I like to use something antibacterial that smells nice.
    • Floor – Last but not least, mop that floor, or at least Swiffer it.

Bathroom
This is my least favorite room of the home, as it’s prone to smells and stains – yuck! Break out the bleach for this one, and make sure to crack the windows so that it airs out while you’re cleaning.

    • Spray everything down – Before you start any one part, spray everything down with a foaming bleach cleanser. Keep your door open and your fan on during and after this step, though.
    • Sink – This is probably less of a disaster than the shower, so it needs less time with the bleach. Wipe it all up and then rinse it all down. Be sure to dry when you’re done to avoid water spots.
    • Shower – The dreaded shower scrubbing… it comes now. If you do this regularly, you might be able to get away with a quick spray and a wipe!
    • Toilet – Don’t skip this. I am convinced that a toilet is dirty no matter how clean it looks, so spritz it with some bathroom cleaner, give it a little scrub, and then leave it at that.
    •  Floor – End by vacuuming your mats and mopping your tiles.

Laundry Room
Okay, so this room is pretty easy except for the laundry part. Truthfully, you’ll want a little laundry going while you clean pretty much every other room in the house.

    • Laundry – Wash and fold it all! Then, you want to get it out of the room so you can access all appliances and spaces.
    • Wipe it down – Take some multipurpose cleaner and spritz everything you can. Wipe it up and suddenly there’s no more chance of dust touching your clean laundry.
    • Floors – Vacuum up that spilled lint next to the dryer!

Living Room
We’ll keep this quick since this one is pretty easy.

    • Tidy up – Fold your blankets, put away any forgotten objects, and straighten your furniture.
    • Vacuum – Run the vacuum, and don’t forget to bring out the handheld vacuum for the couch!
    • Lightly dust – Check surfaces for dust and get rid of it all. This includes the dreaded ceiling fan and those blinds.

Bedroom
You have to do this last, or it’s far too tempting to go in really fast and call it a day.

    • Do the Laundry – Swap the bedding, pick up any clothes laying on the floor, and start the wash.
    • Vacuum – Just like in the living room, your bedroom is likely to be a dust magnet. Don’t forget to vacuum under the bed!
    • Wipe down – Lastly, clean the surface of dressers and nightstands and maybe even get those curtains down and toss them in the wash while you’re at it.

While this list is not all-inclusive, it’s a good reference piece for a quick and regular clean. For more tips on those often forgotten places during a routine cleaning, check out this blog.

You might also want to check out our cleaning hacks to make this grueling process just that much easier.
Now that you’ve hit all the major rooms… I give you permission to climb into that freshly made bed and rest for a bit. Enjoy that clean-house feelin’!

Why Are You Breaking Out This Summer? https://www.youbeauty.com/life/why-are-you-breaking-out-this-summer/ https://www.youbeauty.com/life/why-are-you-breaking-out-this-summer/#respond Mon, 09 Aug 2021 18:45:32 +0000 https://www.youbeauty.com/?p=175228 When you were young, you may have gotten some bad advice about acne. Someone may have told you to sit in the sun, and it will dry out your spots. Not only is that advice hazardous, but it is also very incorrect.

The sun does not dry out acne. The reason many people think that is because the sun alters the pigments of your skin. If you get a tan or sunburn, the redness and irritation of your breakouts will look mild compared to sun damage.

So, really all the sun is doing for your breakouts is damaging your skin even further and worsening your acne.

But, why?

The first reason is the heat. In the summer, it gets hot, sometimes insanely hot. And naturally, that makes you sweat. Yes, sweating when you exercise can be good for your skin, but sweating when you are just sitting around – not so great.

Instead of an after-workout shower that sweat hangs around. It sits on your face mixing with pollution, sunscreen, and any other junk on your face. All that moisture is the perfect place for acne-causing bacteria to thrive.

On top of that, when you are sweaty, you touch your face more. You dab at it with tissues, towels, or even t-shirts. You touch it to see how much shine is coming off. You know, touching your face is a no-no, but when it is already crawling with oils, it only gets worse, and by doing that, you are introducing even more bacteria into your skin.

And rubbing your skin with something like a towel damages your skin’s sensitive barrier. Doing that also aggravates the skin, leading to, you guessed it, acne.

Next, you won’t like this one, but air conditioning. The thing that makes summer bearable could be causing your breakouts. Sitting in the car, the office, or even at home with the AC on feels fantastic because it cuts down on the humidity. The humidity is bad itself, but the AC removes all of it and dries out your skin. That seems like a good thing when you’re oily, but it can actually overdry you, causing your skin to overproduce oils, once again making you breakout.

It seems like there is no winning. What you can do is stop touching your face. Use oil-blotting papers if necessary. And when indoors, try not to let the AC blow right at you. You can also grab a mini humidifier to sit at your work desk or nightstand to reintroduce a bit of moisture back into the air and your skin.

Lastly, you are overdoing it. When you start breaking out due to environmental factors like the weather or AC, you start treating your skin. That is great and all, but you could be overdoing that too. Use a simple spot treatment or a pimple patch at night to calm your zits. Do not pop or pick. Don’t use three different acne-fighting products either. All that will do is irritate your skin, which you don’t want.

To clear your summer breakouts, you need to readjust for the season. Unfortunately, by the time you get the hang of it, the weather will be cooling down, and you’ll have to do it all over again.

How to Prevent Physical Problems from Extended Computer Use https://www.youbeauty.com/life/how-to-prevent-physical-problems-from-extended-computer-use/ https://www.youbeauty.com/life/how-to-prevent-physical-problems-from-extended-computer-use/#respond Mon, 26 Jul 2021 13:00:09 +0000 https://www.youbeauty.com/?p=175205 Even before many of us began working from home, chances are, you used the computer too much. Now, with our work and much of our social life centered around our computer screens, it’s all too easy to find ourselves figuratively glued to the screen more than we would like.

Besides the mental effects that constant computer use can exacerbate are physical ones as well. Extended computer use has been linked to problems like eye strain and pain. While no long-term effects have been linked to computer usage, short-term effects include:

    • Blurred Vision
    • Headaches
    • Neck Pain
    • Back Pain

Fortunately, there are some ways you can mitigate these problems, even when you’re required to use the computer constantly.

Ensure Your Monitor is at the Correct Level
According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, the best position for your monitor is likely just below center, about 40-74 centimeters away from your eyes. If your computer is at the wrong angle, you may be putting your neck and shoulders at risk for pain. Consider lining the top of your screen to eye level, positioning the center of the screen just below.

Try Some Neck Exercises to Alleviate Pain
UC Santa Cruz’s Environmental Health and Safety group suggest using the following exercise if you begin to experience a twinge of shoulder or neck pain. Shrug your shoulders upwards towards your ears and hold for 3-5 seconds, and then release. They recommend stretching this way a couple times to keep yourself feeling comfortable and pain-free while working on your computer.

Change Your Monitor’s Brightness
Another educational institute, the University of Maine, suggests that students and other people using computers frequently adjust their monitor’s brightness to match the surrounding environment. If you work in a bright space, increase your display lighting to match the surroundings. Likewise, if you prefer working in a shadier site, lower the brightness.

Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
The 20-20-20 rule is one of the simplest ways to help reduce eye strain. Every 20 minutes that you are working, take a quick “eye” break from the computer. Focus on an object that is at least 20 feet away from you for 20 seconds. That’s it! Repeating this process every 20 minutes can help prevent your eyes from experiencing strain and other discomfort.

Conclusion
The most important thing to keep in mind regarding computer usage is that moderation and breaks are key. Any repetitive motion (which includes using your eye muscles), can lead to irritation and pain. Try brainstorming projects away from the computer when possible or using phone calls rather than video calls if you’re able to.
Limiting the amount of computer time can help mitigate symptoms, as well as following the tips listed above. If you find you are continually having eye issues, it is always worth a trip to the optometrist to determine if a more serious eye issue is to blame. Visiting the eye doctor every few years is recommended for adults.

Organization Tips for Your Home https://www.youbeauty.com/life/organization-tips-for-your-home/ https://www.youbeauty.com/life/organization-tips-for-your-home/#respond Wed, 14 Jul 2021 14:00:41 +0000 https://www.youbeauty.com/?p=175187 Are you having trouble keeping your home organized? If so, you’re not alone. Between dishes, laundry, and general tidying, organizing your home can be challenging and time consuming. Add on extra chaos if you’re working from home, and it’s not surprising to find yourself feeling lost (sometimes quite literally) among your possessions.
Dedicating a few hours to getting your home organized can help reduce stress and save you time doing your weekly cleaning.

Think Like a Minimalist (Sort Of)
According to a Soap and Detergent Association study, reducing the amount of clutter in your home could likely also decrease time spent doing chores by 40%. It stands to reason that with fewer possessions, you’ll spend less time having to organize them.

Look to sites like Pinterest for inspiration when it comes to achieving a minimalism inspired look. You don’t have to purge 90% of your possessions. Just be realistic about what you use. A good place to start is by following the One Year Rule. If you haven’t worn the clothes, read the book, or used the kitchen appliance in a year, donate it and get it out of your home.

Invest in Storage Devices
While you don’t want to go overboard buying new items since you want to bring less items into your home, consider making limited, wise purchases to aid your organization process. For example, investing in shoe racks can save you time looking for your shoes in the morning before work. Installing an alphabetized spice rack in your pantry makes cooking easier each day. Putting up a few extra clothing rods in your bedroom closet makes finding outfits faster, not to mention saving you time on ironing.

Just remember that when you purchase an item, the intent is to free up space. If you buy the shoe rack, don’t fall into the trap of buying extra shoes to fill it while leaving your old shoes in their original pile.

Create Distinct Spaces
Not everyone has the luxury of a sprawling home. If you find yourself limited on space, it’s still possible to stay organized. Designate a place for every item in your home. If you live in a studio for instance, consider using a folding desk for doing school or work assignment. You can easily fold the desk and store it under your bed or in a closet when you’re done.

If you have workout equipment, dedicate a corner of a room as your fitness area. Keep all your exercise gear in this space. You can even get creative by purchasing multifunctional furniture like a side table that can discreetly hide weights and resistance bands.

Limit Yourself to “One of Each”
A good tip for staying organized is to limit yourself to purchasing just one of certain items. This rule is especially handy when it comes to toiletries. Make a pact with yourself to buy just one bottle of shampoo at a time. Use the entire bottle before buying another one, even if you see an amazing deal or want to try a different brand.
The same rule applies for bath soap, hand soap, lotion, cleaning products, etc. If you’re like many Americans, you’ll likely begin to realize that you already have enough of these items to last you several months.

Conclusion
While staying organized can be tough, especially when living in a smaller space, you can make adjustments that keep you stress- and clutter-free.
